A loving message from Teresa McPhail
& Joseph McPhail

Pastor Roger McPhail was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.  He was the seventh  of eight children. He is the most beloved husband to Teresa and the most beloved father to his son, Joseph.

As his wife and son, we adored him.  His constant love for us was shown daily by his care, kindness and faith.  Roger was adored and loved by his nephews, nieces, brothers, sisters brothers-in-law  and sisters-in-law. He was one of those people whose personality, warm heart and sense of  humor was infectious. He held a special place in his heart for each one of you.

The love for him extended way beyond family to the family of Joey's friends who grew up in our home and went on every vacation to Florida. He loved you boys and you filled our  lives with joy. He had so many wonderful memories together with you.

Love for Pastor Roger also extended to church  and city leaders across

this city and nation. He had a huge vision and huge faith to match that

vision. He trusted God for miracles, and they happened. Pastor Roger

organized numerous city-wide and church-wide events that transformed

the church world in NYC and many of those practices are still in place.

His leadership was admired by all.

Pastor Roger loved the leadership of this church. He loved each and

everyone from his pastoral team.  He so appreciated your hearts for God,

your giftings and support of his vision and calling. He knew he can

always trust you. That meant more than you can know because as you

know, the ministry is a very difficult life. Thank you from the bottom of

his heart, my heart and Joseph's heart.

Lastly, but not least, Pastor Roger loved his church family. He kept tabs on everyone. He kept the sheep in his heart and felt the  responsibility of caring for them tremendously. He also knew everyone by name, their address, phone number (LOL). He had a photographic and sharp mind. People were always astonished by it. He kept up with the follow up of his flock all during his illness. They were always in his heart.

Pastor Roger grew up in poverty as he often spoke about. He graduated from Jack Hayford's, The King's College Seminary. He accomplished great feats such as  pioneering Gateway City Church 30 years ago and  created Mission New York, which gathered leaders across the city in unity to see NYC transformed by God's. He served in ministry for 42 years. He accomplished so much because he was accomplished in preaching, leadership, serving, believing for the greater things and loving Jesus and his family, city and church.

Not bad for a kid from 56th street.

No, my sweet, sweet  loving man, not bad at all.

What in the world are ROGER-ISMS?

He was one of those people whose personality, warm heart and sense of humor was infectious.

Many Roger-isms were celebrated and drew such laughter at his home-going from those who were in attendance.

If someone, exclaimed or commented about something while he was in the middle of his sermon, he would tell them aloud,

     I work alone.

When asked when he wanted a task completed, he would always say,

Yesterday.

I’m not always right, but I’m never wrong!
